Rome Tourism

The small town Fiumicino is approximately 28km away from Rome and has 62.000 habitants.
Most people only know Fiumicino for Rome’s biggest airport being situated there (the Leonardo da Vinci airport) but you should take note of this area as there are plenty of things to see and to do..

The Museo delle Navi (Museum of ships) for example is very interesting since you will see 5 ancient ships which were found when the airport was being built. The museum is right next to the airport so you can’t miss it and it is definitely worth a visit.

Around the dock of the Trajan (Lago di Traiano) you can have a look at archaeological territory. There you can find some remains of the harbour building and the Castello di Porto from the Middle Ages.

On the eastside of Isola Sacra there is a cemetery to have a look at. There are also some ruins of the older church Sant Ippolito which are also very interesting.

For all lovers of fish, there is no better place to visit. The small town boasts a very important fish harbour which has the biggest fish market in the area: from squid to tuna steak, you’ll find any fish under the sun at this market. Or should that be under the sea?

Even if Fiumicino has been outshone by Rome it’s definitely worth a visit to this small town. The area has a certain flair and quaintness that only a small fishing village could create; a must if the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much.

There’s an abundance of accommodation in Fiumicino but it is recommendable to find accommodation in the centre of Rome as there is more to see and you can easily rach the outskirts by the city’s fabulous public transport service (Unterkunft Rom). During the summer, many Hotel in Rom are booked out and / or are very expensive so you might consider having a look for an apartment (Ferienwohnung Rom). This will give you more space and freedom than a hotel could offer and you can come and go as you please. Your family and friends are sure to like this idea as there won’t be any need to be separated onto different floors or wins of a hotel, and you’ll all have plenty of space to feel at home in.

Go to Fiumicino and see what this lovely part of Italy has to offer.
