Increasing numbers of people are deciding to take local vacations this year. For the majority of us the choice is to reduce costs but is this the correct choice or a dreadful error? Commonly we overlook the many local attractions and yet they are sometimes excellent and much better than those we would see elsewhere. Folk living in Britain have an enormous choice of vacation destinations each having a gigantic selection of first class attractions to visit. In this article I discuss the English city of York and York hotels.
The city of York is situated in Yorkshire (a county in England) and was, a long time ago, the capital of a huge kingdom covering most of the north of England. With such a historic city you will not be surprised to find a huge selection of extremely historic architecture, however you might not expect the breathtaking sight of the twelfth century Gothic masterpiece of York Minster.
The first York Minster was a small wooden building in which the Northumbrian King Edwin was, in 627, baptised. It wasn’t until the eleventh century that the earliest substantial stone building appeared on the site. Constructed by Thomas of Bayeux it was enhanced by Archbishop Roger who built a a south transept and a north transept. Following many more additions the cathedral was declared complete and consecrated in 1472. The interior features the world’s biggest medieval stained glass window. York has many other places to visit including; the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Roman Bath Museum, Barley Hall, the National Railway Museum, Fairfax House, York Castle Museum and York Dungeon.
As well as all of the awesome ancient and historic attractions discussed earlier, York is an exciting place to spend an evening partying or enjoy live entertainment. It that doesn’t excite you then you could spend the evening in a pub there are certainly plenty to choose from, including; Old Star Inn, Oscars Wine Bar, The Bluebell Inn, the Slug and Lettuce and The Royal Oak, and, lastly, the Black Swan. Of all of them the Black Swan is probably the best with a pleasant atmosphere and sometimes featuring live music.
Bed And Breakfast Accommodation In York
Like many other cities in the UK you will find a massive variety of York bed and breakfast accommodation ranging from cheap guest houses to luxury hotels. The Middlethorpe Hall hotel is just two miles from the city centre but offers superb bed and breakfast with private gardens, gym, sauna and steam room, and you can even get a massage. Other first class hotels in York include; Parsonage Country House Hotel, Hotel du Vin and Bistro, Marriott on Tadcaster Road and Bishops at 135 Holgate Road and one of the best guest houses is Crossways Guest House on Wigginto Road, or if you are looking for something different why not take a look at Marmadukes Boutique Hotel.
